It happens to everyone, sometimes a few times a year. You wake up with a sore throat, upset tummy or other viral affliction and think, “Oh no. I’ve got the plague.” Of course it’s not the real plague but when we look back at history, the plague is probably the most terrible ailment ever recorded. And, let’s face it, when we’re sick and miserable it might as well be the plague.

This recipe is centuries old, adjusted over the years to use what is available in the region in which it was made. It goes by a lot of names, but I call mine plague tonic because, as the story goes, it was used by thieves during the time of the plague to allow them to stay healthy while they rob the bodies of the deceased of their worldly treasures. Now that’s a pleasant thought, isn’t it?

We may no longer have to worry about the plague (big thanks to modern hygiene practices!) but viruses still abound. The flu, norovirus, and common cold among many other seasonal problems benefit from a healthy immune system. While it’s not something you’ll find on the shelves at the pharmacy, and your doctor may not have ever heard of it, plenty of research touting the benefits of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar. The other ingredients in this tonic are known for their natural health benefits too. So, consider this an all-natural DIY solution that may work in cooperation with a healthy lifestyle to keep you on your feet this winter.

In case you can’t tell from the ingredients, this recipe is HOT, so do not give it to children. For grownups that like spicy food, though, one shot of plague tonic will really wake you up in the morning.
